Blizzards and Birthdays

Maya's first experience with a winter birthday in MN was a tough one. We had invited some friends over for a gathering but Mother Nature wasn't cooperating. We got nearly 18" of snow and it was impossible to get anywhere. So we had a quiet few days at home, snowed in.

Mixing up the frosting.

Helping Dad frost the cake.

Adding sprinkles!

I'M FIVE!!!!

SO AM I!!!! (we tried to convince her otherwise with no luck)

Did she tell you that she is 5?

The Loot!

The drifts outside the door.

Climbing the plow hill.

It was soooo cold outside. Everyone lasted about 5 minutes. Painfully cold.

Talking to her admirers!

Auntie Kate skyped in to sing Happy Birthday as a very special treat.

Cutting the cake.

Maya Turns 5

Happy birthday to the beautiful Maya Wesely Thomas!

You are an amazing and fabulous child. You love to dance and to tell stories. You are an amazingly patient big sister even when your little sister is driving you nuts! You love to dress up and put on shows but you are convinced you will not be an actor until you are 8! You love language and to know what words mean. You interview strangers and give hugs away for free!

You are amazing! We love you!

Sour Cream

Fin LOVES sour cream.
Loves it.
A lot.

We have to keep an eye on her or else she eats it by the spoonful, with her fingers or sometimes just shoves her face in it.

Sometimes we let her have a good time.

Christmases

Down in Owatonna and Albert Lea for Christmas.

First was Christmas Eve at Grandma Babe's house.

Fin ate candy at every chance she could find.

The girls with the less-creepy Santa. Fin still kept an eye on him. She definitely thought the big red guys were someone to watch.

Christmas morning!

Maya and her princess boom cd player!

Fin got a Pinkalicious doll and matching cupcake gear!

The girls in their dresses from Grandpa John and Grandma Elaine.

Next we headed to Albert Lea to celebrate with the Kuchenbeckers!

Maya went on her first snowmobile ride as well.

It was nice to be "home" for the holidays. It felt a lot less rushed and frantic since we were able to hop in our car and go rather than stress out while flying.

Beautifully Frosted

Coldie, coldie, coldie (as the girls would say) but absolutely stunning to mom and dad!

Just stunning.

What Santa Represents

Posted at The Next Family
by: Danny Thomas

You might say
The spirit of Christmas is naïve…
You might say…
It’s made of dreams
That have no bearing on this corporeal existence
Well…
Let me tell you what Santa represents to me…
I grew up in the Eighties…
I suckled at the teet of corporate Christmas…
At Christmas time
I snuggled with a cuddly Santa
That held a coke in his hand
Smiling!
He was from a display
In the liquor store
Where my father worked.
That,
is a cherished memory.
A Christmas memory.
But,
Santa also represents
The spirit of giving
And receiving.
The sprit of sharing
The spirit of
believing in the best of each other
And of the world.
In. spite. Or maybe
Because of, the worst.
Santa is a pirate, Robin Hood, Highwayman, Jesse James, Johnny Appleseed…with all the trouble washed away…
A Populist, Humanist, Faithist, magical representations of the power of giving…
And what does Santa receive?
Well…cookies, milk, what must be one hell of a rock-n-roll sleigh ride…
And the joy of giving…
The joy of being believed in!
The joy of human kindness.
The spirit of light in the darkness
Winter is spare times
And harvest times are done
All we have
all we can do
Is wait and see
what our seeds become…
And all we can do is wait
And tend our seeds with care
Santa represents the idea that giving and receiving are the same.
That sometimes the best gift you can receive is the opportunity to give one.
Give up
Give in
Give out
Sometimes the hardest time to give
Is when you feel you have nothing left to give
That is what Santa represents.
And that is sometimes the hardest time to receive a gift too…
Because you can’t see
Yourself as worthy
Of the gift
Because you’ve closed yourself off
With guilt
And anger
And through your own shame
Or sadness
You can’t see
What is being offered to you…
Let’s remember to receive what is all around us this Christmas
And embrace it with
Open arms
And hearts.

Sledding!

We had our first sledding adventure with the McThors!!! It was awesome or at least the going down the hill part is. The climbing back up left much to be desired for the kids!

The McThors gave Maya a sled for her birthday.

We suited up and put the sled to good use.

Fin wasn't very interested in sledding but she was feeling particularly photogenic.

Santa Came Early

Santa left a note for the girls explaining the early arrival of his presents. Since we were headed down to Owatonna/Albert Lea for the holiday, he didn't want to stress mom and dad out with toting around giant presents. So...Santa came a couple of days early!

Maya wanted a drum set. Santa brought her "Band Hero" for the Wii complete with drum set and guitar!

Santa brought Fin a kitchen set!!!
