Catching up...

So, I'm finally catching up on the last month. Make sure you scroll down/back because I have added posts back to Maya's birthday. It's only a month later! :)

Anyhow, just wanted to alert you to the new stuff if you aren't using Reader.

Happy January 31!

Bounce, bounce, bounce

Maya is still taking her gymnastic "classes" on Saturday mornings. She loves Bounce and now that she has her leotard(s) she thinks she is even cooler. I say leotards because she has a princess one that she got for Christmas and then she has a princess swimsuit that steps in when the real leotard is dirty. Today was one such day. Nothing like gymnastics class in a swimsuit.

She is a go-getter. She has mastered the sit down-stand up on the trampoline which has taken a while to get the coordination together. And her teacher called her a fancy girl with her dare-devil moves on the bars.

Here she is on the trampolines.

And on the long-tramp.

The rings.

The parallel bars.

And finally, her dare devil move. They are just supposed to hold on and touch their toes to the bar but of course Maya does that and then wraps her legs around the bar and throws herself over.

We are going back tomorrow for a birthday party. Perhaps there will be more Bounce pictures in the near future.

Of course there is always the question of what Fin is up to during these moments. Here is a live action feed! Dammit...it is side-ways...well, it's still cute just tip your head to the side!

Fin's 6 Month Appointment

We finally made it in for Fin's appointment today. It was only 10 days late (these days in our house...that's record setting)! She showed off her teeth, her sitting, her overall charming demeanor and of course her snotty nose and congested cough. The doc says that nothing has settled in her ears or lungs...so just wait it out. We held out on the shots because I felt she was already feeling punky enough; there's no need to add insult to injury.

As for the stats...get ready!

Fin:
4 months--18 pounds 13 ounces & 26.25 inches
6 months--21 pounds even & 28 inches
For a gain of 2 pounds 3 ounces and 1.25 inches

Maya:
4 months--14 pounds 14 ounces & 25.5 inches
6 months--17 pounds 13 ounces & 26.5 inches
For a gain of 3 pounds 1 ounce and 1 inch

Perhaps Fin is slowing down a bit...but not much. She is the size of an average (50th percentile) 13 month old! Dr. Curtin isn't concerned because she is just as off the charts on height as she is on weight. Danny and I make hearty stock I guess! :)

Enjoyment...I think

Fin has finally taken to eating. We have made it through the orange foods (squash, sweet potatoes and carrots). Next, the greens.

Danny is feeding her in these shots. Can you tell the difference? ;)

A lot of times this look is Fin staring at the red light that keeps the red eye at bay. Well, in Fin's case it creates the "Terrified Look". I'm not sure which is worse.

When the food doesn't come fast enough she resorts to licking her tray.

She likes it; she really likes it.

Don't even try to take this spoon, buddy!

A New Regime...

As Danny said earlier today, "It's the end of an error"!

Last term I couldn't wear my Obama shirt because I was teaching but this term...no teaching for me. In honor of the changing of the guard we broke out the President Poopyhead t-shirt for Fin.

Hooray for 1.20.09!!!!

Another Attempt

No words needed.
This time it was squash.
The last one is blurry but it says quite a bit.

The Nursing Relationship

Well, sometimes we have a bit of jealousy about the time that Fin has to spend with Mom nursing. So this afternoon Maya thought she's have a go at it. I was cracking up, Danny was rescuing, Fin was screaming and Maya was doing her darndest to get Fin some milk.

Humor me...

Maya has had a sense of humor from early on...
But lately she is starting to understand jokes and funny stories
When Auntie Kate and Gramma & Grampa were visiting from Seattle,
We had an evening of telling jokes around the table
& Grampa attempted to teach Maya the Knock Knock concept...

I sometimes have to ask Maya to tell me when she gets to the funny part.
(punch line is not a term we are gonna try to explain yet...)

and we had another night of jokes/funny stories around the dinner table recently when Bobby and Christy came over for dinner...

She has also started to be interested, concerned if grown ups are laughing
and she doesn't know why...

(The timing of this is serendipitous, as I am working on a show who's main character is a student of humor and tells stories about not getting her parents jokes when she was young - the name of the play is Clean House - by Sara Ruhl...)

anyway all of this is too much exposition...
the point is, this morning when we got to Maya's class room
they were telling jokes while having breakfast!
Hooray.

I sat down with Maya while she ate her oatmeal, and asked her if she wanted to tell me a joke...

She did;
"Once there was a pizza man on our street and he brought a crust!"

Thomas Family Band

Lookee, lookee.
Someone thinks they are very, very important.

It would have been interesting to take a poll to see who each of you thought was doing something interesting! :)

The interesting thing I wanted to point out was our little sitter-upper! While Fin isn't that into rolling over (although she did roll from her back to her belly on 12.28) she is very interested in sitting up.

And here is a less sedate version of the picture. There was quite a racket going on. (And yes, the Princess banner is a remnant of Maya's birthday...no judgment please!) :)

A Taste of Something New

Looking back through Maya's journal we realized that Maya had started cereal/veg at about 4 1/2 months. Danny and I were recalling Maya's intense interest in our food and how she would grab our plate/fork/drink/etc. The past month or so we've been wondering when Fin was going to start getting interested. We imagined it would be soon because she is approaching the six month mark.

Of course the kids are different and do things according to their own time but we did realize that we probably have a lot to do with the timing of this difference. When Maya was little (0-4 months) she was always in one of our laps or on the bouncy seat on the table while we ate. She was close to the action and observed us non-stop. Let's just say Fin hasn't had the same experience. She often spent meal times bouncing in her Einstein or once in a while in the Bumbo on the table--but 3 people eating, the meal, and Fin on the table makes for a very full table.

We finally got the highchair out mid-December because I was feeling guilty that she wasn't a part of our meals and lo and behold...someone's interest in our food has suddenly increased. So, we finally gave it a test run!

Enjoy!

She knows something is up! She's giving us "that" look.

The approach. And yes, "that" look is still present.

Mostly around the mouth...and of course "that" look...

The Dodge. But she's giving someone the stink eye.

Oooo...seriously...do you want to mess with her?
